Air Filter Options ?

Presumably Toyota fitted a paper air filter because it's cheap and easy to replace, but what have you guys fitted?
I don't want a new intake, just a better filter, but is there really any benefit?
Most performance options appear to be layers of different grades of sponge. Even my lawnmower has a sponge filter and this is easy to clean rather than replace. Some sponge filters seem to need oil, some don't. I think I would rather avoid oil if it's going to mess with the sensors. Are there any warranty issues if you fit a 'better' filter. Would I hear any more induction noise over the sound of a non-resonated exhaust, and would I really notice tiny gains in bhp or torque?

Foam-Filters like HKS or Pipercross are the worst thing you can do to your motor.
Filtration of particles gets worse, wear of motor gets increased.
Only intake-sound gest a little better.

An better option (for me) is an oiled cotton-filter - still a better sound (you here working of the blow-off-valve more)
-but much better filtration than an foam-filter. BMC is a very good choice - they original powered the BMW M3 (E46).

This works in my GR:

Air filter threads are like exhaust threads. People want different things.

A bigger noise at the expense of accelerated wear and sometimes power output is apparently attractive. To each their own.
Pure guess, but Toyota's filter will probably be a pretty good compromise.

It would be great if all aftermarket filter manufacturers provided filtration (read engine damage reduction) stats for their filters alongside their hero dyno stats.
I wonder why most do not?? ?

As the number one purpose for this component to exist is to filter air, you would think that that would be an important characteristic to retain or even improve while seeking more power or noise.

Check out the video below for a wider perspective.

It has a bit of an amateur hour feel and the National Physical Laboratory are unlikely to be worried about the competition ?
But, having watched a few of his videos over the years, they are pretty well done so worth a watch.

If you want performance I’d focus not on the filter but design of the air intake.

The key aspect is the friction losses before and after the filter not so much the filter itself, the filter has large areas to cause minimal losses already it’s the bit after I would look at. If you wish to optimise performance efficiency.

Think of it like an exhaust, small diameter and bendy you know is restrictive, a mesh or filter at the end isn’t going to make huge differences. (It’s not the same but might help put into perspective)

The oem filter is not just a paper filter, it is a specially developed paper & fine fibre compound filter for maximum air flow and maximum dust filtration. Do the aftermarket filters have superior dust filtering qualities?
