Rearview mirror in the way. Possible (hi tech) solution

This is how much the rearview mirror obstructs my view (when in its highest position!). It obstructs a complete car coming from the right. And pedestrians. As you can see this isn't my original rearview mirror though, it's a dashcam/rearview camera LCD display unit placed in front of the original in the exact same position (for testing if this could work). You can see the original mirrors on/off button at the bottom behind the new one and it's frame sticking out on the left side.

Point is if I move the original mirror even further up with some bracket, due to the rear window being so far down I'll only see the tarmac behind the car and not very far behind the car at all. But with this camera/display mirror I can remove the original mirror completely and place this one as high up as I want, I'll have a perfect view behind me at all times regardless position.

Main test now is to see where to place the camera at the rear. When the rear window gets dirty you have a hard time seeing out with the original mirror, how bad does it get with the camera placed on the inside of the window? Will it get worse faster or slower when the dirt adds up? I only need to clean a small circle on the window for the camera to get a clean view though hehe. I'll also test placing the camera on the outside, right behind the shark fin on the roof. I'm pretty sure it will keep itself clean much much longer there! I'll keep you posted. Now I'll look at how to attach the display/mirror further up, right up against the plastic housing.

Some feedback on the quality of the display as a mirror. Main issue is the framerate at 30fps, there is a visible 30fps sort of stutter. For me personally it's okay but I'm guessing some would have a harder time with this. The resolution is absolutely good enough IMHO. The rear camera is 1080p but the display is only 320 pixels vertically but I have no problem, I feel I have a better detailed view than with the real mirror which is a bit odd. But my eyesight at the displays distance isn't perfect, my glasses are optimized for what is further away.

Maybe go in on the underside of the tail lamp to avoid water flooding from above breaking the seal? I've gone just straight down from the antenna, over boot seal and into the roof liner from there. Up top water collects in the gutter anyway.
Me too, straight in and over the seal. Not 100% air tight of course but no water problems so far.

Anyone that has asked permission to make these and sell has gotten an okay from me. No kickback/commission or anything. Same with the GoPro GR Yaris headrest mount.

Or get a friend to print it in exchange for a beer

You're welcome :)

Oh, BTW, if anyone wants a special version for the 70mai display/mirror/dashcam that needs to have the camera tilted a bit just say the word. I haven't uploaded it to Thingiverse yet.

Hi MagnusT

Do you have a 3d file for the bracket you've used? I basically followed your mod on my GR Yaris using the same Vantop rear view mirror camera and had just installed it with the shark fin antenna mount too (Thanks for the design!). Right now I'm using a two piece metal bracket mount with 1 hole drilled onto the plastic cover and it's a little wobbly going over bumps espcially with the GR's firm suspension. Do you have a 3D design of the bracket to share also?

Thank you!
Tiong

Edit: pictures attached of my sketchy mount

Are these housings available please?
The full cover over the whole shark fin, no.

The camera housing to place behind the sharkfin is available to print on the link above, either if you know anyone with a 3D printer or just use any of the online printer services where you upload the file and get the item printed and sent to you.

Double sided tape (I use a thin vowen one for carpeting) Has stuck through multiple automatic car washes ?

There are just a few rear cameras that seem to be used by most of the different display units. Often the different 720/1080/4K front camera models use the same rear camera.

On my car with the front camera on the left there is a sensor on the windshield partly obstructing the view. It works but it is in the frame.

How did you mount the rear camera casing to the roof Magnus? Would 3D printing a replacement extended antenna housing be possible?
I screwed it onto the large plastic cover with a 3d printed bracket. But bend two pieces of metal or anything similar would do too. Attaching to the original mirrors mounting is a bit far off to use a 3d printed long arm. Possible but not optimal IMHO to get stable and shake free.

watched a video on You tube that covers the fitting of this dash can mirror, first problem is its designed to be fitted over the OEM mirror, second issue is the power cable which I would want to be tucked out of the way, so I would need a permanent fitting kit and an idea what fuse/power feed(y) to use. Other than that it ticks a couple of boxes.
No, it can be bought with a mount that fits on the original small mount on the windscreen, you remove the whole original mirror thingy.

There is 12v power that goes to the original mirror (powers its dimming function) but the wires are a bit thin and the dashcam/mirror uses a LOT more power so you are right, better route a cable down the a pillar for power.

I'm liking the front and rear camera. Just a thought though about the interior rear mirror. The wires are just for the auto dimming what about putting a mirror from the standard Yaris on from what I've seen they're a lot smaller, no wires! A classic manual switch over.
Or just file away one or two mm on the original adjustable mirror holder and move the original mirror up a couple of cm.

Very good job. Thank you for the video. I thought that you ve kept the oem rear view mirror and tape the new video one on it. So, what kind of parts do you have with the rear view mirror , to hook it on the windshield? Which parts do you take from, the oem rear view mirror? Photos maybe please ?
The old mirror and the arm holding it is completely removed. The new one is bolted to the large plastic cover with some 3D printed parts to get it angled the way I want it and as high up as possible. But there are mounts that fit the original clip on the windshield https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001802347450.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2fa44c4dhofa4i
