HUD retrofit?

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere already, but I'm wondering whether it may be possible to retrofit the convenience pack HUD in a circuit pack car? For those who've received their cars already, does the dashboard upper surface appear to have a removable panel behind the instrument binnacle, or is it all one piece? I would have though Toyota would have made all these things modular to standardise production, but the discussion around heated seat retrofit suggests otherwise.

Also just wanted to add I tested what the HUD was like in bright sunlight, totally fine can see it easy.
In addition can also see it easily whilst wearing polarised sunglasses which I wasn't expecting (y)

mmm not sure, to do it properly requires a bumper change. The rear radars would be easier.

Next on my slow but steady to-do list, heated steering wheel (easy), heated seats (hard), lower seat position (easy) and I found an unknown connector tucked away at the back of the loom next to the HUD I would like to figure out what it's meant for (easy).

Yeah, I figured it would do. I'm intrigued how doable the computer components of that are though, should someone be so inclined to change that. I do wonder if the multimedia unit might need to be changed/updated in some way though?

I hooked up my car to TechStream today to check for calibration updates for it etc.

One thing I noticed is that the HUD thinks that the navigation module isn't fitted (for some reason) and therefor isn't displaying nav instructions on the HUD. So at somepoint I need to try and figure out how the HUD is determining this, is this something baked into the firmware (unlikely as they they all share the same part number), is this something set as part of the central gateway init (unlikely as I performed an initialisation on the central gateway and made no difference AFAIK), is this a CAN signal or PID being broadcast from another ECU that the HUD is listening for (possibly this?), and how to change it.

To illustrate what I mean here are two screenshots show the HUD datapoints; first one is UK spec convenience pack, second one is my vehicle. You can see my HUD has different options highlighted in red
In addition according to TechDoc: Clearance Sonar System is TOYOTA parking assist-sensor system, which my car deffo doesn't have, but the HUD thinks it does.. etc.

So rule of thumb until I have figured it out, where possible for those buying HUD's, if you care about navigation and such showing on the HUD, ensure the HUD module you are buying comes from a Nav equipped vehicle.. I'm sure all this is possible to change, it's just a matter of navigating the maze that is vehicle diagnostics to change that one value needed, which is likely held somewhere else in the vehicle etc.

Have been working on trying to understand the issue more, weirdly the same thing is reported to not work on some regular Yaris’s when it should..? Currently trying to trace what signals are sent between the cluster and the HUD, when you toggle drive assist on/off etc

I have been driving on some quite bumpy roads whilst on holiday and suddenly the HUD started showing the compass and audio controls, all for about 5 mins before it stopped working again. Also on the cluster it nows shows compass, navigation and audio controls for the HUD. So I now believe my issue is simply a dodgy wiring connection somewhere, hopefully giving all the connectors a good wiggle will do the trick.

I popped off the bottom panel on the drivers footwell, reached up and gave both H145 and H146 a push, H145 (white connector) made a slight clicking noise :) and happy to report everything is working as expected now. If I hadn't of driven it so hard perhaps that connector would of remained not properly seated for sometime, and down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out how to configure firmware for the HUD/configure car config I would of gone haha..

I still need to edit together the timelapse of the HUD install and will do a final video showing the HUD working going through all the various functions/things it can display.

They do yeah have a different windscreen, the HUD is perfectly bright in sunny daylight and nighttime, the only thing I can think would be different is perhaps slightly better clarity, to reduce ghosting of the image slightly.. I don't know what else could be improved on

@bytesandbolts: so if I undersand everything right it is easy to install ne HUD.
You don’t need any wireing harness. You Need „only“ the HUD, the panels and the bracket.

Am I right?

How do you uninstall the big Panel?
It is quite easy once you have removed the dashboard and the wiring was already on my car but taped back in the loom. It would be really easy if you removed the windscreen.

Hi, I have sourced a HUD unit now and popped off the side panel in the car and can see the wiring connector that is taped up. Was wondering if anyone has any pictures/guidance in taking apart enough of the dash to first test the unit and then fit it please.

I'd like to test it first, before ordering the additional bracket and dash panel...

You have to slacken and remove most of the front dash, pull it forward enough to get enough clearance to get the HUD in.

I can’t remember fully tbh, I may have done but equally pretty sure I’ve only removed the steering wheel once when I swapped it for the heated steering wheel.
