Rearview mirror in the way. Possible (hi tech) solution

This is how much the rearview mirror obstructs my view (when in its highest position!). It obstructs a complete car coming from the right. And pedestrians. As you can see this isn't my original rearview mirror though, it's a dashcam/rearview camera LCD display unit placed in front of the original in the exact same position (for testing if this could work). You can see the original mirrors on/off button at the bottom behind the new one and it's frame sticking out on the left side.

Point is if I move the original mirror even further up with some bracket, due to the rear window being so far down I'll only see the tarmac behind the car and not very far behind the car at all. But with this camera/display mirror I can remove the original mirror completely and place this one as high up as I want, I'll have a perfect view behind me at all times regardless position.

Main test now is to see where to place the camera at the rear. When the rear window gets dirty you have a hard time seeing out with the original mirror, how bad does it get with the camera placed on the inside of the window? Will it get worse faster or slower when the dirt adds up? I only need to clean a small circle on the window for the camera to get a clean view though hehe. I'll also test placing the camera on the outside, right behind the shark fin on the roof. I'm pretty sure it will keep itself clean much much longer there! I'll keep you posted. Now I'll look at how to attach the display/mirror further up, right up against the plastic housing.

Some feedback on the quality of the display as a mirror. Main issue is the framerate at 30fps, there is a visible 30fps sort of stutter. For me personally it's okay but I'm guessing some would have a harder time with this. The resolution is absolutely good enough IMHO. The rear camera is 1080p but the display is only 320 pixels vertically but I have no problem, I feel I have a better detailed view than with the real mirror which is a bit odd. But my eyesight at the displays distance isn't perfect, my glasses are optimized for what is further away.

I really like this dash cam idea, I'm kinda used to the AstraJ mirror I think forward vision is fine it's significantly better than the stock mirror that's for sure. But the view out the back isn't great with such a small rear window, this solves that albeit with a small display. What options did you look at for the camera? The latest 622GW has video out so potentially could be shown on the main display or a version of it.

Maybe start a new thread with a bit of a step by step for the install / mods for the non-technical?

PS> spotted this on their website, somebody's GR getting rear ended! Tougher than then look these little cars.

Mine is the 622GW I'm pretty sure.

When I get five I'll take it to bits again and take more pictures of the install and post them up.

I've made my own solution for the mirror situation.
I decided to remove it completely and use the rear view of my dash cam instead.
It's turned out really neat. Some aspects were fiddly to do to make it neat, such as modifying the USB camera power supply to connect to the original mirror power supply and shortening the USB cable so that it all fits perfectly in the available space.

Breaking which seal?

Please excuse the poor clips, they will be replaced once I find some more suitable and discreet but this is the route i've taken. No seals broken?

Please can either of you put up pictures of the route you have both used? I would rather find the best one so will use yours if its better.
I'm still thinking of ways to go in through the roof atenna as I would much prefer everything to be hidden.

That would be nice, but I think you can do the wrap thing anyway.
Now there is literally a few mm cable showing before it goes under full roof width cover that simply clicks into place. From there it lies in the gutter under the hatch before passing the boot seal. Little to no risk for leakage.
When going through the antenna, you'll need to make hole for the cable to pass, and will have more difficulty to properly seal it as it's fully exposed to the elements. Everything is possible but it's definitely more invase with very little benefit...

Seems self cleaning, it was foggy with condensation (moist atmosphere and temps going below zero C) and it cleared. Very good 'visibility' compared to OE narrow letterbox view. EDIT: and with wide angle of view NO blind spots anymore!

Dashcam itself looks like good image quality (Sony sensors), camera to the right and extendable, now good deal (I paid full ), originally bought for adjustable back-up lines on other car but ended up here, backup function is useless on top of roof so still need the original reverse cam.

Anyone that has asked permission to make these and sell has gotten an okay from me. No kickback/commission or anything. Same with the GoPro GR Yaris headrest mount.

Or get a friend to print it in exchange for a beer

You're welcome :)

Oh, BTW, if anyone wants a special version for the 70mai display/mirror/dashcam that needs to have the camera tilted a bit just say the word. I haven't uploaded it to Thingiverse yet.
