Speaker size and upgrade advice

As the title. Thinking of upgrading the speakers. Any one know the size? Also any recommendations I was thinking focal. After a bit more bass so may be under seat sub. Don't want to go down the road of amps etc... Just something to improve from standard.

What system have you got - the JBL or non branded?

You want speakers with a high sensitivity rating if you don't want to add amps. I've used Focal splits and JBL splits in the past off factory head units. (Noting the JBL speakers from Toyota look and sound nothing like the quality of their aftermarket speakers!)

I got them out for deadening purposes but didn't measure them up - these are the JBL speakers, marked up as J6.

Im really interested in this question too. While the front setup sounds fine and there is plenty of bass, my rear speakers legit sound like they are broken tin cans when you push the fader all the way to the rear. Does anyone else get that on the JBL or standard Toyota setup?

If you're running the standard head unit, watch out for the impedance of the new speakers. Lower impedance will be louder than the originals, but will draw more power out of the standard amp than designed, potentially overheating or burning it out.

I just installed the Focal system IS TOY 165 for Toyotas. A really good improvement in the bass region, going lower down in frequency also. Better resolution from the treble speakers. Midrange can possibly be a matter of taste, the frequency response is quite different, an improvement to my ears. But YMMV depending on taste.

Very easy to swap out, proper connector adaptors included and everything just slotted in place (apart from one simple issue where I had to remove half a mm of plastic in two small places on the bass speaker's outer rims, easy peasy)

Thanks @MagnusT. That's been very helpful. Can I ask, did you just change the front speakers, or rear too? Any suggestions on setup to change the whole lot?

If you are going to change the speakers watch a video how to remove the door panels (I posted one earlier in this thread).

But a must watch is how to put back the A-pillar cover, it has a very special clip at the top (due to side curtain air bags) that is hard to figure out, with this video's help it takes less than five minutes to swap out the treble speaker ?

Took a friend out in my circuit pack today and he commented how good the sound system is. Maybe for people who are used to top of the range systems in BMW's this doesn't measure up? It's weird how some people are saying they think the system is quite good and other's say it's awful. When I had a gt86 every owner universally agreed the system was awful. I can say for sure the system in the yaris is way way better than what we got in the gt86.

Just the front system (doors and A-pillars) But I was impressed of how these sounded by themselves when I just tested turning off my under seat sub, so I think I'll check to maybe swap the rears to supplement bass, to maybe remove the sub. Maaaaaybe. There might be a problem though, the rear speakers might have the bass slightly cut in the amplifier/head unit. Not sure but I got that feeling when testing the audio signals going into the anc/ese amplifier.

If anyone wonders what the rear speakers look like and how they're mounted:

I had this apart when I added sound dampening to lower road noise from the tyres at the rear.

Focal Inside series for Toyota looks interesting as an upgrade. The kits are the same for CHr and Yaris and the blurb says that Toyota use global std 6.5 and 6*9 speaker patterns for all their vehicles. Given that the IS TOY front components fit the GR, it might just follow that the othe Yaris/CHR bits will pop straight into CP cars?

TOYOTA INSIDE SERIES

from these kits, it looks like the

would drop into rear space nicely. Integrated passive. XOs. At that price not much to lose.

I am going to email Focal France to check. But if the sizes and mountings are same in chr, Yaris, it sort of follows that the GR would have taken stock oem sized abs mountings. The speaker impedance and efficiency ratings are meant to connect to non premium Chr abs Yaris, although there is an amp option that uses head pre amp.

looks like straight forward install too.

I may go for this with f/r replacements then add twin underwear subs, as a stepping stone. Although am hankering after a Dsp set up.

A warning.

I swapped to the Toyota Focal speaker kit some time ago. Bass vastly improved, treble more refined. But midrange wasn't flat. After fiddling I've come to the conclusion that the head unit has a quite tweaked frequency response MATCHING the OEM speakers by compensating the OEM speakers flawed frequency response (by raising to compensate a dip around 1kHz for example). When swapping to speakers with a more flat frequency response the head unit messes this up by still raising around 1kHz with a significant amount.

So I had to get an EQ in some way. Solved that with an Alpine under seat sub with built in DSP for all speakers. But will take a bit of tweaking....

Bought the Eton kit from Hasler but I really do not like to cut the original wiring.

So I bought the Focal kit aswell to use as tweeters from there and speakers in the doors and might use the Eton main speakers in the rear.

Will the head unit take it?

Warning #2;

This doesn't matter equally as much because the workaround is easy. But I just found that theToyota head unit has built in DSP and has built in delay turned on for the speakers (left front verified). So do NOT add delay in your after market DSP when playing music from the Toyota head unit. Then you get double delay and sound stage goes bananas ?

Standard speaker size for Toyota is 16cm in the front doors (17cm for JBL), rear speakers are 16 or 14 cm, that depends on the car.
Tweeters are 3cm (JBL can go up to 8cm)
Fixation holes in the doors are also standard for all Toyota's.

My worries with the speakers dont want to end. ?

Eton speakers from Hasler were not direct fit so I bought a new Focal IS 165 Toy kit. What arrived is almost the same but French variant with code FI PCT 165-4. Tweeters connect fine but the main speakers are not with the same plug as Toyota and the housing has to be modified slightly to fit the mounting points.

Those who have fitted the 165 Toy - is it plug and play with correct connectors?

Yes, adapters included

But as said before, you need to add an EQ to benefit the improved speakers in the midrange. Bass and treble sounds improved without an EQ (although deep bass is cut from the head unit but pretty low down). But midrange gets kinda odd without a proper multi band EQ.

This is what the Circuit Pack Head unit will play in to your speakers:
