Hi, not sure this is the right place in the forum, but has anyone heard/seen/learned how to remove the top speed limiter ?
I guess it's still early, but all the reviews I've seen top to the factory 240km/h
It's not bad, but I am sure this car can do much more

Hi, I live in Garmisch Partenkirchen Germany, which is at the southern end of the autobahn connecting Munich with the Alps and which is almost completely speed limit free for that entire section. So I am very familiar with the top speed capabilities of the car. I am not aware of any differences in gearing in the German versus UK version, and it does not hit the 231kph (143mph) top speed in 5th. Redline in 5th is about 10 KPH short of the 231 limited top speed. And 6th still has a lot of strong acceleration left after shifting at the redline in 5th. The limiter is very annoying because it hits the limiter very easily (231kph) and then briefly "shuts down", causing the car to slow a few kph and then ignites again back to the shutoff. This causes a really annoying surge/shutdown over and over. It is very difficult to keep the car at top speed by trying to feather the pedal just below 231 so you don't hit the cut-off and get the dreaded little shutdown. Especially on a curve at 231KPH. The car hits this very quickly and easily, so there is definitely alot left, although given the very short gearing it would be limited by the redline in any event. If the limiter were like the Rev limiters I've had in other cars which are simply electronic limiters at a certain rpm and didn't shut the power off briefly, just prevent it from going higher, it would not be so annoying. But the constant surge/shutdown, surge/shutdown is terrible. Bob

Interesting comments about the wheelbase, the presumption being that this makes the GR liable to be skittish at speed.

The GR's wheelbase is 110mm longer than even a 992 generation 911, and no-one questions their high speed stability ;)

The lack of overhangs makes it look compact I guess, complete contrast to the Porsche.

My guess is it was just a conscious bias towards in-gear acceleration and the top speed was simply the outcome of those decisions. Nothing to do with Supras or longevity, the GR really doesn't need to go any faster and 90+% of users will probably never get near its vmax anyway.

If (when ?) I hit the limiter at 230 km/h I shall probably change my mind and be looking for an extra 30 km/h!

Yup, +1
Not the wheelbase.

Tested my GRY CP up To 240km/h
Was crazy, fast and really fun!
But not need to go faster in this car! ?
Just a fraction under 150 MPH
Knew it could do it!
Your instinct was that it might be getting close to unstable I'd bet??

No need to squabble about privacy issues online guys, vaccine passports are coming (and have **** all to do with any vaccine).

Back on topic, this is a genuine question, where will >143 mph be particularly useful, are you all autobahn commuting? There’s only one tiny bit of the Nordschleife where you could benefit and that’s on a non tourist day.

Have to be honest I'm a bit confused about the desire to release a possible couple of more mph from a short wheel base brick thats best work is probably between 60 and 120 mph and is probably getting near it's realistic(for wheel base) terminal velocity at 143? Even more so in the UK to be fair even when tracking regularly there can't be many times you are running out of top end? No expert but that's my take on it all but I guess looking at the money some people throw at their cars it's an obsession more than a requirement! ? (y)

To be fair people are bailing from WhatApp currently even if they did use it before because of it's link to Facebook now. Also it's all pretty stupid if you ask me bacause having a mobile phone alone gives you little annonimity as far as I can work out so I'm not really sure what the perceived deal is? People are worrying about data and identity theft but most younger folk happily go out and only take their keys, phone and a credit/card and rarely use cash these days leaving a data/purchase trail bigger than the Milky Way! ?:ROFLMAO:?

I find the 143 MPH top speed to be quite enough and it reaches this in 5th Gear, so 6th gear is for achieving better economy at motorway speeds.

Despite the wide track and relatively long wheelbase, this is a very light car with quite a high centre of gravity as it is designed as a Rally Car!

So, under heavy braking at anywhere its top speed, there is a huge transfer of load onto the front axle and the car will squirm at the rear end and gets very lively.

It will probably hit well over 150 MPH De Limited, but you are likely to kill yourself or someone else, unless the car is substantially lowered (Properly with coilovers), seats lowered to help lower the C of G (But you won't be able to see, unless you are very tall) and lots or aero added to keep the car stable.

So, me personally will not looking to raise the top speed of my car and just keep on spanking AMG Merc's, Ferrari's and McLarens along my favourite twisty B roads, as that is what the GR does best.

Nothing to do with any country's speed limit, so that can be eliminated as the reason. The limiter cutoff is well above those.

Most likely to ensure the longevity of something.
Drivetrain?
The occupants?
Toyota's reputation for being sensible?
A bit of all those?

We'll doubtless find the answer in time.

We don't have our car yet but I have been reading the manual online (sad I know). Interesting to see that on the list of recommended change up speeds for max acceleration it advises changing up to 6th at 140mph. I thought the speed limit of the car was set by the rev limiter in 6th but doesn't seem then that that is the case. All academic though as this is not a car we will be taking to the autobahn and I would never do these speeds in the UK

Completely academic of course but I'd bet that many on this forum would like to know why Toyota decided on 230 KPH / 143 MPH

In 6th gear the car is still accelerating when the speed limit cuts in. From the look of it, well before power output and the forces acting against that reach equilibrium.
Rev limit in 6th is not a factor.

We drive only max 120km/h in Finland so top speed it is kind of useless unless you do European trips. Given the car's spec and sould ballistic in gear acceleration is more in line than top speed of +230km/h or whatever as it's only marketing talk in practice. If it was perfect world car would be geared so that it reaches it's max speed with 6th Gear. maybe with shorter final drive or thighter gearing from Cusco it could be done. Found little reviews of those, it would be surely be interesting!

Can't say i agree! I have been in 4 events the past two months, all of them at >300km away from where I live. Been doing most of the Autobahn sections flat out at 230kph and the car is totally fine and confidence inspiring - if there is such thing at these speeds with any car (maybe the perfect German roads help a lot). The car is not GT for sure in terms of noise but having family sedans overtaking at 240kph is just ridiculous when you know there is at least 20kph of top speed left on the table because of the speed limiter!
