What do you think about the steering of the GR?

Moin, moin! (== Hi there!)

Since I'm driving cars (legally) I had to decide whether I'd like to have fun or to do all days driving...
To change this, I ordered the GR Yaris.

What shall I say? - The tiny Yaris makes a lot of fun and seems to be the solution of my problem.

The only thing I don't really like on the GR is that the steering is much to light and a bit indirect.

Compared to my Tracktoy

For a 4WD the steering it's well communicating, forces are low as long as you don't use the power provided. Unfortunately (as with any 4WD) the steering gets heavy when you fully accelerate due to the "blocking" of the drive shafts under load (this is a principle fault of any 4WD and FWD). The other day I drove my old GT86 (RWD) and I look forward getting my GR86 :). On a dry road I prefer the driving-force-free steering of a RWD, if your target is maximum propulsion you have to live with the drawbacks of 4WD. Your miles may vary...

Bye for now Fred

This is one of the reasons I love mine on narrow 205 et40 wheels. While I lost some directness, the steering (with good toe) is a lot sweeter/more true on/off the power and in sync with the car's balance.

In general: steering feel is very sensitive to toe front settings, I basically find the best one by trial and error starting from dead ahead baseline.

Not as good as my NB MX5 or my old FD3S RX7, better than my E82 135i, better than all modern BMW EPAS I've tried.

Would be keen to hear comparisons to the Porsche EPAS which I hear is also good.
it's very IMOgood under lock, even compared to 991 leccy steering . It's Less good around the straight ahead and in instant feel as you transition to adding some lock, but I see that as a function of the rollsteer induced through the GR oem suspension settings (CP). You always know where 991 tyres are pointing and where the mass is, whereas in the GR you don't really care - once it has sniffed out an apex And darted at it.

Some GR owners are adding some negative camber at front end to get more 'darty'

i am considering goes the Lichfield nitro route and might fiddle play with small camber change if I do.

As others have said, AWD cars do steer differently. It's part of the experienc. The GR has not disappointed me. Far from it.

OK,but I preferred the steering on my previous car ,a jdm wrx sti, quicker and more authentic.GRY improves with speed and loading up in corners imo.

I like the steering. I’ve had a Lotus Elan Sprint and nothing compares with that for steering feel, so modern EPS cars are judged on relative feel and feedback. It feels very natural to me, with well judged weight, certainly not dead.

It’s definitely best in Sport mode, there’s more fight in track mode under power and noticeable torque steer in normal mode.

Having temporarily swapped my GR for an M140, it's leagues ahead of BMW's offering (standard v standard). The BMW offers nothing of the front end, the Yaris has good weight and you can mostly feel what it's doing (interested to see how it behaves after camber bolts and geo). I have just done the same swap for that very reason the BMW felt like the front end was connected by an elastic band in comparison. The GR‘s steering seems to lighten at speed (normal mode) I’m going to try the same roads in the other settings for comparison.

The steering is the most disappointing aspect of the GR for me. My dd is my Focus RS mk3, and the steering in it is miles better than the GR - more precise, and more feel. On the other hand, the GR has a small turning circle, while the Focus has a turning circle of about 3 miles on a clear day.

Haha , thats something i don't miss with my MK3 Focus RS...having to do a 3 point turn ALL the damn time because it has the turning circle of a bus.

I still miss it though , hope to have another one someday ...nothing else comes close in the hot hatch segment performance wise on a circuit to the MK3 Ford RS that isn't an Auto , except the GR. Two oppositely specced cars. Bigger and Heavier vs Smaller and Lighter both in terms of displacement and weight.

Would absolutely love to do a track day with one to see how both cars compare.

Read up on this thread, post 95 I think shows a summary of what quite a few of us went for and happy with.
