Took a friend out in my circuit pack today and he commented how good the sound system is. Maybe for people who are used to top of the range systems in BMW's this doesn't measure up? It's weird how some people are saying they think the system is quite good and other's say it's awful. When I had a gt86 every owner universally agreed the system was awful. I can say for sure the system in the yaris is way way better than what we got in the gt86.

I just installed the Focal system IS TOY 165 for Toyotas. A really good improvement in the bass region, going lower down in frequency also. Better resolution from the treble speakers. Midrange can possibly be a matter of taste, the frequency response is quite different, an improvement to my ears. But YMMV depending on taste.

Very easy to swap out, proper connector adaptors included and everything just slotted in place (apart from one simple issue where I had to remove half a mm of plastic in two small places on the bass speaker's outer rims, easy peasy)
Thanks @MagnusT. That's been very helpful. Can I ask, did you just change the front speakers, or rear too? Any suggestions on setup to change the whole lot?

Just the front system (doors and A-pillars) But I was impressed of how these sounded by themselves when I just tested turning off my under seat sub, so I think I'll check to maybe swap the rears to supplement bass, to maybe remove the sub. Maaaaaybe. There might be a problem though, the rear speakers might have the bass slightly cut in the amplifier/head unit. Not sure but I got that feeling when testing the audio signals going into the anc/ese amplifier.

Gotcha, thanks bud. What under seat subs did you get? Any suggestion and build guide? I have removed the rear seats so could technically fit a big box in the back... but that might be a bit overkill, and maybe too wild. :D

It's probably now got better sound quality than the JBL system!

All those Focus upgrades specifically say
The system is not compatible if the vehicle is already fitted with the factory premium Hi-Fi option.
Which apparently leaves JBL owners stuck with no easy upgrade option.

So much grief. Years ago we just had an mdf rear parcel shelf made and had 2 x 12" subs, usually either Pioneer or Kenwood, a nice big boot mounted amp and a nice head unit, again either Pioneer, Kenwood or sometimes Blaupunkt. If there was money left over we'd add a nice graphic equaliser also ??
Back in my day moment?
Remember them well?

I would rather had the JBL to upgrade from since I could then run a three way system using the speaker mounting on the dash also, going lower in frequency up on the dash. Having all the midrange from the doors is IMHO not optimal.
It would involve significantly more money to do that over the Focals you've fitted. If I was going to do anything I'd want a simple bolt in solution. I'm not so sure having the dash top mounted mid range reflecting off the windscreen is a good idea for audio sound quality?

I assume they're using active crossovers in the amps with both systems, or are there passive crossovers?

The two way system in the Circuit Pack is passive. I think they maybe even skipped any filter at all on the door speaker, I didn't see any inductor mounted on the stock speaker (the Focal had though). Not sure if the JBL is active or passive, it has different electronics. I'm leaning towards active, I think I saw the speakers were connected separately to it in the schematics.

Yeah, this drop in ready system from Focal I installed was very nicely priced, I paid 140€ including shipping. Good bang for the buck for sure.

If anyone wonders what the rear speakers look like and how they're mounted:

I had this apart when I added sound dampening to lower road noise from the tyres at the rear.

Focal Inside series for Toyota looks interesting as an upgrade. The kits are the same for CHr and Yaris and the blurb says that Toyota use global std 6.5 and 6*9 speaker patterns for all their vehicles. Given that the IS TOY front components fit the GR, it might just follow that the othe Yaris/CHR bits will pop straight into CP cars?

TOYOTA INSIDE SERIES

from these kits, it looks like the

would drop into rear space nicely. Integrated passive. XOs. At that price not much to lose.

Thanks @Mainframe, great stuff!

Safe to say that the Focal Inside Comfort are a proper plug'n'play replacement for competition specced GRs, without upgraded soundsystem?
I am going to email Focal France to check. But if the sizes and mountings are same in chr, Yaris, it sort of follows that the GR would have taken stock oem sized abs mountings. The speaker impedance and efficiency ratings are meant to connect to non premium Chr abs Yaris, although there is an amp option that uses head pre amp.

looks like straight forward install too.

I may go for this with f/r replacements then add twin underwear subs, as a stepping stone. Although am hankering after a Dsp set up.

And how Absolutely shit all that stuff ultimately sounded by the standards we enjoy today. I was that soldier. Bought into the stuff. Blunderbuss vs hi powered rifle stuff. It was also relatively expensive and crude, possibly with more grief compared to modern systems.

No grief, more choice is my take.
